A student worker at Shaw University's radio station, WSHA, circa 1970s. Shaw was the first Black college to own a radio station. WSHA hit the airwaves in 1968.

There are just over 100 historically Black colleges and universities in the United States, and one-third of them have radio stations on campus.

is a new initiative that is taking on the massive task of preserving the audio collections at these HBCU radio stations 鈥� and to help reformat collections, in order to keep this history intact for generations to come.

Due South

Leoneda Inge

Leoneda Inge is the co-host of 瓜神app's "Due South." Leoneda has been a radio journalist for more than 30 years, spending most of her career at 瓜神app as the Race and Southern Culture reporter. Leoneda鈥檚 work includes stories of race, slavery, memory and monuments. She has won "Gracie" awards, an Alfred I. duPont Award and several awards from the Radio, Television, Digital 瓜神app Association (RTDNA). In 2017, Leoneda was named "Journalist of Distinction" by the National Association of Black Journalists.
