College students are heading back to campus over the next week, which usually means lugging futons up stairwells, battling the chaos in dorm parking lots and enjoying many ice cream socials.

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
A quick look at the incoming class:
- 4,081 expected first-year students
- An additional 749 transfer students will join the campus community
- 42 percent ranked within the top 10 students of their high school class. 77 percent ranked within the top 10 percent (among the 70 percent of the class whose schools reported an official rank in class)
- The first-years hail from 44 states and 21 countries
- 9 percent are African American

About the incoming class:
- 4,270 new first-years – the largest first-year class in North Carolina.
- Includes 235 valedictorians and salutatorians.
- About 50.9 percent of the expected first-years were in the top 10 percent of their high school class.
- Approximately 1,347 of the expected first-years plan to enroll in the , making it the most popular program among first-year students.

New students arrive on Tuesday, August 18. First-year students move into their East Campus residence halls from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. Special parking rules will be in effect Tuesday to accommodate student move-in. Parking information can be found .
President Richard Brodhead, undergraduate deans Stephen Nowicki and Christoph Guttentag will address new students at a convocation in Cameron Indoor Stadium Wednesday at 10:45 a.m.

Nearly 1,300 first-year students will move into Wake Forest residence halls on Friday, August 21. Students begin moving into their rooms on the south side of campus at 8 a.m.
