The results of an Elon University faculty union election are still pending.
Earlier this week, a National Labor Relations Board hearing officer in Winston-Salem recommended that its regional director in Atlanta overrule Elon University's objections to the results of a faculty union election.
The university has until May 28 to file exceptions to the recommendation.
After that, the union has a week to respond. Then, the NLRB regional director will make a decision on whether to validate the results of the union election.
The election results showed a majority of voters were in favor of unionizing. However, Elon University asked the NLRB to throw out the election claiming union members interfered during the voting process.
Non-tenure-track faculty at Elon University want a union to ensure fair wages and job security. They also want more transparency from the university's administration about salary and promotion decisions.
Elon University administrators are opposed to unionization because they said there are already systems in place on campus to work out any differences.
