The trial for a lawsuit challenging UNC Chapel Hill's race conscious admissions process is expected to conclude today.
Federal district Judge Loretta Biggs has heard arguments attacking and defending UNC Chapel Hill's use of race as a factor in admissions.
The plaintiff group Students For Fair Admissions argues statistics show the university uses race as a dominant factor. UNC says it considers the race of applicants in a limited way, permitted by law.
Students for Fair Admissions founder Edward Blum has his sights set high for this and other cases he's supported that challenge affirmative action.
"Because the mission of Students for Fair Admissions is to end the use of race and ethnicity in college admissions, the only court that can render that opinion is the Supreme Court," Blum said.
It could be months before the judge issues her opinion, but in any event, the case could be appealed.
