UNC-Chapel Hill Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz says he is weighing an opportunity to become the new president at Michigan State University.
鈥淭hrough the years, a variety of professional opportunities have been presented to me. My family and I must weigh each one, and we are weighing this one,鈥 Guskiewicz said in a statement.
As first reported by the Michigan State鈥檚 student newspaper, , Guskiewicz is the only finalist currently under consideration. Another finalist 鈥 University of Texas at San Antonio President Taylor Eighmy 鈥 reportedly withdrew from consideration.
In his statement, Guskiewicz did not give a timeline for his decision.
鈥淚 am focused on serving the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a special place I have lived, worked, and loved for 28 years,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 am very proud of what our university accomplishes every day as one of the best public universities in the country.鈥
Guskiewicz has been the chancellor at UNC-Chapel Hill since 2019, first serving on an interim basis. He has been on the faculty since 1995, and won a MacArthur 鈥済enius鈥 award in 2011 for work on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of sport-related concussions.
At Thursday's UNC Board of Governors meeting, UNC System president Peter Hans praised Guskiewicz鈥檚 research, student engagement and fundraising.
鈥淐hancellor Guskiewicz has done a good job of leading Carolina through some of most challenging times in its recent history, and it鈥檚 no surprise that he would be on anyone鈥檚 short list elsewhere in the country to strengthen public higher education,鈥 Hans said.
Hans added that he and Guskiewicz often joke about which one of them has the more difficult job.
鈥淏eing chancellor at Chapel Hill (is) such a complex enterprise,鈥 Hans said. 鈥淪o many people who care so passionately about the institution. It鈥檚 so high profile both within the state and the country, indeed in the world, in many ways. It鈥檚 a really difficult role. And I think that鈥檚 probably what Chancellor (Holden) Thorp, Chancellor (Carol) Folt, and Chancellor Guskiewicz have experienced.鈥
Guskiewicz is a native of Pennsylvania and holds degrees from West Chester University, the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Virginia. He has previously worked with the National Football League鈥檚 Pittsburgh Steelers and was a member of the NFL鈥檚 head, neck and spine committee.
