An officer with the Raleigh Police Department was shot while responding to a residential burglary on Tuesday evening, according to a statement from the RPD Public Affairs Office.
Raleigh police identified the wounded officer on Thursday afternoon as First-Class Officer M.A. Gillick. An Army veteran, Gillick has worked with RPD since 2022. He remains in critical condition at WakeMed hospital, police said.
Additionally, two people involved with the case — the suspect and another adult male — are dead, police said. Police identified the deceased in a news release on Wednesday afternoon as John Rowe, 73, and Antonio Rodrigues, 70. The latter is the suspect in the case, police said.
While details are scarce and the incident remains under investigation, officers responded to a 911 call regarding a burglary in-progress on Tuesday at the 600 block of Democracy Street – in Renaissance Park – around 5:39 p.m. The caller, a woman, said she knew the suspect from a previous relationship, according to police.
Officers who responded to the call said they heard shots fired from inside the residence. Only one officer was shot.
"Our officer suffered a serious gunshot wound in an exchange of shots with the suspect," Raleigh Deputy Chief Rico Boyce .
“The outpouring of support to Officer Gillick and the entire RPD family from the community has been wonderful," Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson said in a statement. "We are blessed by a community that embraces one of our own during this challenging time. Officer Gillick’s family has shown tremendous strength, composure, and resilience during this difficult time. The family asks for privacy as they continue to stand by Officer Gillick.”
