Jones Sweeps Up In 3rd Congressional District

Rep. Walter Jones (R-NC)
US House of Representatives

It was supposed to be a tough race for U.S. Rep. Walter Jones. But the state's longest-serving sitting congressman cruised to victory last night in the 3rd Congressional District's Republican primary.

Jones, who has held his seat since 1994, faced a rematch with former George W. Bush staffer Taylor Griffin. Jones beat Griffin for the Republican nomination in 2014, but only by 6 points.

Last night, Jones carried well over half the vote and blew past both Griffin and a second primary challenger, Marine Corps veteran Phil Law.

Retired Army Captain Ernest Reeves won the district's Democratic nomination against David Hurst.
