The Republican-majority Supreme Court in North Carolina heard arguments Thursday over restoring voting rights for those convicted of felonies.

North Carolina鈥檚 newly seated Supreme Court heard arguments Thursday on whether people convicted of felonies 鈥� tens of thousands statewide 鈥� should be permitted to vote if they aren鈥檛 in prison but still are serving probation or parole or have yet to pay fines.

The Supreme Court鈥檚 decision could affect admissions practices at public universities nationwide. UNC-Chapel Hill was at the center of the hearings Monday.

The most diverse court in the nation鈥檚 history 鈥� among the nine justices are four women, two Black people and a Latina 鈥� is weighing challenges to admissions programs at the University of North Carolina and Harvard that use race among many factors in seeking a diverse student body.

The justices will consider whether state courts, finding violations of their state constitutions, can order changes to federal elections and the once-a-decade redrawing of congressional districts. The case probably will be argued in the fall.

The high court will consider whether to hear arguments over the conservative "independent state legislature" theory.
